Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Substance Abuse Prevention and Support
Introduction / Background
Substance abuse in the workplace is a growing concern with significant personal and
organizational consequences. Employees struggling with substance use disorders (SUDs)
are often less productive, take more sick days, are more prone to injuries, and may
experience conflict with colleagues and supervisors (Nova Recovery Center, 2020).
These challenges not only affect individual performance but also impact overall
workplace morale and efficiency.
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) were developed to support employees facing
such challenges, evolving over time to address a wide range of personal and
psychological issues. Modern EAPs now include confidential counselling, educational
resources, and support mechanisms aimed at promoting employee well-being.
This proposal outlines a comprehensive EAP tailored to substance abuse prevention and
support. It focuses on education, counselling access, wellness initiatives, and recovery
support. Designed for use in any organization, this model also serves as a benchmark for
enhancing existing EAPs by integrating proactive, evidence-based strategies that support
both employees and the broader organizational environment
Objectives of the Employee Assistance Program
The primary objectives of the proposed Employee Assistance Program are as follows:
1. Educate employees and management about substance abuse, its signs, risks, and
implications in the workplace.
2. Provide Access to confidential, professional counselling services for individuals
dealing with substance use disorders.
3. Reduce Stigma by fostering a workplace culture that promotes open dialogue and
support rather than punishment and secrecy.
