Question 1: Warm-ups, Focus and Creative Process

1.1
It is important for learners to do body and voice warm-ups before a performance
because these activities prepare them physically, mentally, and emotionally. Body warm-
ups help learners release tension, improve posture, and increase energy levels, which
are essential for movement-based activities like drama and dance. Voice warm-ups, on
the other hand, help to strengthen the vocal cords, improve articulation and projection,
and prevent vocal strain during performances. Both types of warm-ups also help
learners focus and become more present, which is crucial for expressing emotions,
listening to others on stage, and responding creatively.

In preparing my learners for a performance, I would start with gentle stretching and
breathing exercises to calm their nerves and prepare their bodies. Then I would
introduce playful and age-appropriate physical activities such as shaking out limbs or
simple movement games to energise the group. For voice, I’d use humming, tongue
twisters, and volume control exercises to get them used to using their voices effectively.
I would also create a routine that the learners become familiar with so that warm-ups
become part of their performance mindset.

1.2
One body warm-up I have learnt is called the “Shake Down”. Learners stand in a circle
and shake out each limb while counting down from 8, then 7, then 6, and so on. For
example, they start by shaking the right arm 8 times, then the left arm 8 times, then
each leg, and repeat with fewer shakes each round. This warm-up is fun, gets the blood
flowing, and loosens the muscles, helping learners feel more awake and ready to
perform.

One voice warm-up is the “Humming Scale”. In this activity, learners hum gently while
sliding their pitch up and down, like a siren. This helps them control their breath, warm
up the vocal cords, and explore different vocal ranges without straining their voices. It
also encourages focus and helps them listen to their own voices more closely, which is
a vital skill in drama and music activities.
