ASSIGNMENT 2
DUE DATE: 31 JULY 2025
1. Introduction
In today’s fast-paced, digitally interconnected marketplace, grasping the psychological
drivers behind consumer behaviour is more essential than ever for businesses,
marketers, and scholars. Among the most impactful psychological concepts influencing
consumer choices is the idea of social proof. Derived from behavioural psychology,
social proof refers to the human inclination to observe and emulate the actions of
others, especially when faced with uncertainty or unfamiliar situations. In the consumer
context, this means individuals often rely on the opinions, behaviours, and experiences
of others before making purchase decisions.
In the digital era, social proof manifests in various forms: from customer reviews and
star ratings to influencer endorsements, social media interactions, word-of-mouth
referrals, and content generated by users themselves. These forms of validation not
only help shape consumer perceptions of brands but also serve to lower the
psychological risk of buying unfamiliar products or services. As e-commerce and social
platforms become increasingly influential, so too does the role of social validation in
shaping consumer choices. This literature review explores the complex and evolving
role of social proof in consumer decision-making, supported by theoretical insights,
empirical studies, and examples drawn from real-world business practices.
