1.1 Definitions (20 Marks)

a. Particle: A particle is a small localized object that can be described by properties
such as mass or charge. In science, particles include atoms, molecules, and subatomic
components (OpenStax, 2021).

b. Atomic model: An atomic model is a theoretical representation that shows how
subatomic particles are arranged within an atom. Various models have evolved over
time, such as Bohr’s and the quantum mechanical model (Giancoli, 2005).

c. Subatomic: Subatomic refers to particles smaller than atoms, including protons,
neutrons, and electrons (OpenStax, 2021).

d. Protons: Protons are positively charged particles located in the nucleus of an atom
and define the atomic number of an element (Serway & Vuille, 2020).

e. Neutrons: Neutrons are neutral particles found in the nucleus that contribute to
atomic mass but have no charge (Jones & Childers, 2021).

f. Electron configuration: Electron configuration refers to the specific distribution of
electrons in atomic orbitals and plays a key role in chemical bonding (Giancoli, 2005).

g. Energy: Energy is the capacity to do work or cause change and exists in various
forms like kinetic, potential, thermal, and electrical (OpenStax, 2021).
