Question 1

1.1 Differentiate between the assessments types below by evaluating their
importance in teaching and learning

1.1.1 Assessment as Learning. (Textbook: page 6)

Assessment as learning focuses on the learner’s role in monitoring and evaluating their
own learning process. It involves self-assessment and reflection, allowing learners to
become aware of how they learn and to take responsibility for their learning outcomes.
Importance in teaching and learning

Develops metacognitive skills, where learners assess their own understanding and
learning needs. Encourages learner independence and active engagement in the
learning process. Helps learners to set personal goals for improvement.
According to Dreyer and Mawela (2019), this type of assessment empowers learners to
identify what they have learned and what they still need to work on (Textbook, p. V).

1.1.2 Assessment of Learning (Textbook: page 23)

Assessment of learning is summative in nature. It is usually conducted at the end of a
learning cycle to evaluate and report on learner achievement, based on specific outcomes
or standards.
Importance in teaching and learning. Provides evidence of learner achievement for
certification and reporting purposes. Informs decisions about promotion and
progression to the next grade or phase. Often takes the form of tests, examinations,
projects, or final performances. As noted in the Textbook (p. 23)
