Assignment 4 (2025)

Teaching Mathematics in the Intermediate Phase

Common Fractions in Grade 5

ACTIVITY 1: Content Knowledge (10 marks)

1.1 Definition of a Common Fraction (2 marks)
A common fraction is a mathematical expression that shows a part of a whole. It is
written using two whole numbers separated by a line (vinculum). The top number,
known as the numerator, represents the number of parts being considered, while the
bottom number, the denominator, indicates how many equal parts the whole is divided
into.

1.2 Two Key Concepts from the Definition (4 marks)

 Numerator: The numerator is the number above the line in a fraction. It tells how
many parts of the whole we have or are working with. For example, in the fraction
¾, the numerator is 3.
 Denominator: The denominator is the number below the line in a fraction. It
shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into. In the example ¾, the
denominator is 4, meaning the whole is divided into 4 parts.

1.3 Summary of Table A (2 marks)

 Grade: 5
 Subject: Mathematics
 Content Area: Numbers, Operations, and Relationships
 Topic: Common Fractions
 Concepts and Skills: Calculating fractions of whole numbers that result in
whole-number answers. Learners are expected to solve problems like "What is ⅓
of 12?" and understand the relationship between parts and wholes.
