The Impact of Digitisation on Employee Wellness and Resilience in the Modern
Workplace: A Qualitative Exploration

1. Introduction

The modern workplace is experiencing an accelerated transformation driven by the
widespread adoption of digital technologies. This phenomenon—commonly referred to
as digitisation or digital transformation—goes beyond the mere use of new tools or
platforms; it signifies a fundamental reconfiguration of how organisations function,
communicate, and manage human capital. The integration of technologies such as
artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, automation, remote collaboration tools, and
cloud computing has reshaped traditional organisational structures, altered work
routines, and redefined employee roles and expectations.

On one hand, digitisation offers clear benefits: streamlined operations, enhanced
communication, increased access to information, and the potential for greater
productivity. Employees are now able to work more flexibly, collaborate across
geographical boundaries, and access data-driven insights that inform decision-making.
However, these advantages are often accompanied by complex challenges, especially
with regard to employee well-being and adaptability.

Among the emerging concerns are issues such as digital fatigue, technostress,
blurred boundaries between work and personal life, and reduced opportunities for face-
to-face social interaction. Furthermore, the fast pace of technological change demands
a high level of adaptability, placing continuous pressure on employees to reskill and
upskill in order to remain relevant in their roles. For some, this environment fosters
growth and innovation; for others, it generates anxiety, burnout, and disengagement.

,In light of these developments, it becomes imperative to understand the psychological
and emotional impacts of digitisation from the perspective of those most affected—
employees themselves. Gaining insights into how workers experience, interpret, and
respond to digital transformation can inform the development of more supportive and
human-centred workplace strategies.

This study adopts a qualitative approach to explore the complex interplay between
digital transformation and employee wellness and resilience. Through an in-depth
examination of lived experiences, the research aims to uncover how individuals
navigate the demands of a digital workplace, what coping mechanisms they employ,
and which organisational practices either hinder or support their well-being. Ultimately,
the goal is to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on digital-era work
psychology and provide practical recommendations for fostering healthier, more resilient
work environments in an increasingly digitised world.

, 2. Background to the Research Study

The digitisation of the workplace has undergone a profound transformation—from the
simple act of converting analogue data into digital formats to a sweeping economic and
socio-cultural shift that now defines modern organisations. Initially, digitisation referred
to the basic process of translating paper-based or mechanical records into digital
systems, a practice that dates back to the 1960s. This foundational stage, which
marked the early phase of the so-called Digital Revolution or the Third Industrial
Revolution, paved the way for widespread adoption of digital computing and automated
record-keeping.

As technology continued to evolve, the focus shifted from isolated digital applications to
digital transformation—a more comprehensive and strategic approach that integrates
digital technologies into all aspects of business operations. In this context, organisations
are not just automating processes but fundamentally reimagining their structures,
cultures, and interactions. This transformation has had a profound impact on workplace
dynamics, particularly within Human Resources (HR), where digital tools have facilitated
the development of virtual platforms, self-service HR systems, and strategic talent
management practices. Moreover, digital technologies have enabled remote work and
the formation of virtual teams, reshaping traditional ideas of presence, collaboration,
and productivity.

Globally, the economic influence of digital transformation is undeniable. As of 2018,
digitally enabled firms contributed significantly to global gross domestic product (GDP),
and forecasts predicted that by 2023, over 50% of the world’s nominal GDP would be
driven by digitalised sectors. This underscores the integral role of digital technologies in
shaping modern business models across departments such as marketing, operations,
finance, and human capital management.

Contemporary digital technologies—such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing,
robotics, automation, and the Internet of Things (IoT)—have accelerated this
transformation, offering the promise of increased efficiency, enhanced decision-making,
