ASSIGNMENT 4 2025

UNIQUE NO.
DUE DATE: 21 JULY 2025

, Assignment 04 (INC3701 Inclusive Education).

QUESTION 1

1.1 Five key challenges faced by learners in South Africa that contribute to school
dropout (10)

1. Poverty and Hunger: Many learners attend school on an empty stomach.
According to the article, about 13% of children go hungry "sometimes, often or
always," which affects their ability to concentrate and participate actively in class.
2. Long and Dangerous Travel: Learners in rural areas often walk over 10 km to
school, while urban learners face transport violence, such as in the Cape Flats
where stray bullets are a threat. This contributes to fatigue, absenteeism, and
eventual dropout.
3. Overcrowded and Under-resourced Classrooms: Learners are taught in
noisy, overcrowded environments with up to 60 students per class. The pressure
on teachers to cover the curriculum leaves many learners behind.
4. Bullying and Violence: A high percentage of learners, especially in no-fee
schools, report bullying. Girls also face sexual violence, even during school
hours, making school an unsafe environment.
5. Lack of Support at Home: Many learners return to empty homes, face domestic
violence, or have to take care of siblings. With no academic support, schoolwork
becomes a low priority, leading to poor performance and dropout.

1.2 Five strategies schools can implement to reduce dropout rates (10)

1. Feeding Schemes: Expand and improve nutrition programmes to ensure
learners are fed at least once daily, helping concentration and attendance.
