1.1 Description of Visual Arts Activity
The proposed Visual Arts activity for Grade 5 learners is titled “My Dream House:
Building with Recyclables.” This 30-minute lesson is designed to be implemented in a
classroom with limited resources, making use of recycled materials such as cereal
boxes, cardboard offcuts, toilet paper rolls, used tin cans, plastic bottle caps, egg
cartons, and scrap paper. The primary aim of the activity is to nurture creativity, spatial
thinking, and environmental responsibility by guiding learners to construct a model of a
dream house using only recyclable materials collected in advance.
The lesson begins with a five-minute introductory discussion led by the teacher. During
this time, the teacher will introduce the concept of using recycled materials in art-
making, highlighting how what is typically considered waste can be repurposed into
meaningful creative projects. The teacher will also show a few simple examples or
images of structures made from recyclable materials to stimulate learners' imaginations.
This introduction will serve to activate prior knowledge, spark interest, and explain the
objectives of the activity in an accessible manner. The discussion will be linked to
broader environmental themes and the CAPS emphasis on sustainability and
responsible citizenship.
Following the introduction, learners will spend approximately twenty minutes engaged in
the hands-on construction of their dream houses. Learners will work individually or in
pairs, depending on the availability of materials and space. Each learner will be
encouraged to plan their structure before starting and to think critically about how to use
the materials available. They will learn how to manipulate and combine different textures
and forms to construct walls, roofs, windows, and other elements of a house. During this
phase, the teacher will move around the classroom to observe learners’ progress, offer
guidance, and ask open-ended questions to encourage reflection and deeper thinking
about the design choices being made.
