Introduction

In recent years, gender-based violence (GBV) has gained growing attention as a global
human rights crisis. However, the intersection of GBV and disability remains largely
under-acknowledged in both academic literature and public discourse. Persons with
disabilities particularly women and girls are at significantly higher risk of experiencing
various forms of violence, including sexual assault, intimate partner abuse, and
institutional neglect. According to the World Health Organization (2022), women with
disabilities are up to four times more likely to suffer sexual violence than those without
disabilities. Despite these alarming statistics, awareness campaigns targeting GBV
often overlook the unique experiences and needs of individuals with impairments,
rendering their voices invisible in the broader struggle for gender justice.

The story of Sarah, a 28-year-old woman with a physical disability living in a rural
community, illustrates the lived realities of many. Sarah has faced multiple forms of
exclusion economic, social, and educational while also enduring violence from a partner
who manipulates her dependence on him. Her journey from silence to empowerment
began when she encountered a community awareness campaign led by women with
disabilities. This experience introduced her to available support services, connected her
with others facing similar challenges, and ultimately enabled her to leave the abusive
environment and begin rebuilding her life with confidence. Sarah's case highlights the
transformative potential of inclusive awareness campaigns when they are designed with
empathy, accessibility, and survivor participation at their core.

This essay critically explores the promotion of awareness campaigns that address GBV
among persons with disabilities. Drawing on human-interest narratives, relevant
literature, and international as well as national policy frameworks, it investigates how
such campaigns contribute to empowering survivors to make informed decisions. The
discussion evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of current strategies and considers
the structural, cultural, and systemic barriers that continue to undermine progress. The
analysis is guided by intersectional and social justice perspectives, with particular
