, FMT3701 – Assignment 2 (Due: 26 July 2025)
QUESTION 1 (50 marks)
1.1 Explain the concept “number sense” and its development. (4 marks)
Number sense refers to a person's intuitive understanding of numbers, their
relationships, and how they are affected by operations. In young learners, number
sense develops gradually through experiences such as counting, comparing quantities,
understanding place value, and using numbers in everyday situations. Key aspects
include flexibility with numbers, estimation, and the ability to reason numerically.
Development begins with concrete experiences using objects and gradually moves to
abstract reasoning.
1.2 Distinguish between verbal and object counting, giving two (2) examples for
each. (10 marks)
Verbal Counting is the ability to recite number names in order, without
necessarily understanding quantity.
Examples:
1. A learner saying, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5” while pointing randomly without matching
objects.
2. Singing a counting rhyme like “Five little ducks went out one day…”
Object Counting involves one-to-one correspondence between number words
and objects.
Examples:
1. A learner counts five apples by pointing to each one and saying the
numbers aloud.
2. A child moves counters into a pile while counting, ensuring each is
counted once.
