1.1 Define the following terms with examples
1.1.1 Remedial
Remedial refers to extra support or teaching provided to learners who are struggling
with certain academic skills. It is aimed at helping them catch up with their peers.
Example:
If a Grade 4 learner cannot read at the expected level, a teacher might give the learner
extra reading sessions to improve their basic skills. This is a remedial approach.
1.1.2 Coherent
Coherent means that something is clear, logical, and makes sense as a whole. In
writing or speaking, coherent ideas are well organised and connected smoothly.
Example:
A coherent essay starts with an introduction, followed by clear body paragraphs, and
ends with a strong conclusion all linked together logically.
1.1.3 Colloquial Language
Colloquial language is informal, everyday speech used in casual conversations. It
includes slang or regional expressions that people use when talking to friends or family.
Example:
Instead of saying, “How are you?” someone might say, “Howzit?” in South African
colloquial language.
1.1.4 Didactics
Didactics refers to the method and practice of teaching, especially when it focuses on
the content and how it should be delivered to learners.
