ASSIGNMENT 3 2025
UNIQUE NO.
DUE DATE: 2025
, Question 1
1.1. Difference between paraphrasing and summarising (4)
Paraphrasing is when you restate someone else's ideas in your own words without
changing the meaning. You usually keep the same length as the original sentence.
Example:
Original: "Education is the key to success."
Paraphrase: "Being educated is the most important step to becoming successful."
Summarising is when you take a longer text and shorten it by only including the main
points or ideas.
Example:
Original paragraph: "Many people believe that social media helps us connect, but it also
causes stress, anxiety, and distraction in daily life."
Summary: "Social media connects people but can also cause stress and distractions."
So, paraphrasing keeps the details, just in different words, while summarising focuses
on only the important points.
1.2. Teaching the three listening phases in a Grade 11 classroom (21)
Listening has three main phases: pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening.
Here's how I would teach them:
1. Pre-listening:
This is where I prepare learners before they listen. I’ll start by discussing the topic of the
audio or video. For example, if we’re going to listen to a recording about climate
change, I’ll ask them questions like: “What do you know about climate change?” or
“Have you seen news about it?”
I might also introduce new words they will hear and explain their meanings so they don’t
get lost during the recording.
