Emergent mathematics is the term we use to describe how children construct
mathematical concepts and acquire mathematical skills from birth. With the
above statement in mind, differentiate between mathematical concepts and
mathematical skills, and provide an example for each. Please do not use the
examples from the guide, come up with your own. (6)

Answer:

 Mathematical Concepts are abstract understandings such as quantity, shape,
measurement units, or temporal concepts. They form the “big ideas” children
internalize.

Example: A child grasps the idea of conservation of volume when pouring cereal
from a short bowl into a taller one and understanding the amount stays the same.

 Mathematical Skills are practical techniques or procedures children use to
apply those concepts in real situations.

Example: A child uses measurement skills by using hand spans or paper strips
to measure the width of a classroom desk.
