i) Eliciting the target language from the context
T: Alright everyone, I have written a sentence on the board about the questions I just asked you. If I pass my
exams, I will throw a party. I think that was Julian’s idea to throw a party. Who wants to tell me how many parts
this sentence has?
S: I think it’s 2 parts
T: Yes, well done Levi
T: These 2 parts each have their own name. One of them is the if clause and the other is the main or result
clause. Which one do you think is the result clause?
S: I will throw a party?
T: Yes, Julian, Well done. And that would make the 1st part of the sentence our If clause. The “if” clause is really
easy to remember because it has the word “if” in it.
T: What does the if clause tell us when we read the sentence?
S: That it might not happen?
T: Wow, Jaime, excellent. Yes, it might not happen. But you guys really want it to happen so that you can have a
party, right? However, if it doesn’t happen, will you be having a party?
S: No
T: Exactly, well done. The if clause is the part of the sentence telling us the condition of the sentence. Basically
you can have a party but only if you pass your exams. The result of passing your exams is to throw a party. That
is why they are called the if clause and the result clause and these 2 clauses together in a sentence are known as
the first conditional.

ii) Eliciting the form
T: Ok, Lets work out the form together of first conditional. Let’s start with the obvious. What word does our
sentence start with?
S: If.
T: Yes, Excellent. So we have If + what? Focus your attention on the board. I have drawn a timeline for you.
Think about our sentence again. Where on the timeline do you think it fits in?
S: Future
