SECTION 1: BASIC UNDERSTANDING AND CONCEPTS [10 MARKS]

QUESTION 1

1.1 Literacy (2 marks)
Literacy means being able to read and write. It’s also about understanding what you
read and being able to use language to express your thoughts and ideas clearly.

1.2 Emergent literacy (2 marks)
Emergent literacy is the early stage where young children start learning about reading
and writing, even before they can actually read or write properly. It includes things like
pretending to read books, recognizing letters, and enjoying stories.

1.3 Genre (2 marks)
A genre is a type or category of book or story. For example, fairy tales, rhymes,
adventure, and mystery stories are all different genres. Each genre has its own style
and features.

1.4 Multiculturalism (2 marks)
Multiculturalism means including and respecting people from different cultures, races,
and backgrounds. In children’s books, it means showing different traditions, languages,
and ways of life so children learn to respect diversity.

1.5 Picture books (2 marks)
Picture books are books that have lots of colourful pictures and simple words. They help
children understand the story by looking at the pictures, which support the text. These
books are great for young children who are learning to read.
