Introduction
As a student teacher preparing to speak at a community seminar about the importance
of mathematics, I’ve found myself thinking deeply about what maths really is and why
it’s so important in our lives. Many people think of maths as just numbers and rules, but
studying Unit 1 and Unit 2 in MTE1501 has helped me see maths in a much bigger and
more meaningful way. Maths is not only about calculations—it is also about thinking,
solving problems, and understanding the world around us. In this essay, I will reflect on
the nature of mathematics, its role in society, and how my view of it will shape how I
teach one day.
What is Mathematics?
Mathematics is more than just formulas, numbers, and rules. It’s a way of thinking that
helps us make sense of the world. According to what I’ve learned in Unit 1, maths is a
human activity that involves seeking patterns, solving problems, making predictions,
and thinking logically. It has grown over time as people across different cultures tried to
understand and solve real-world problems. Maths is creative, and even though it
involves precision and structure, it also allows for exploration and discovery.
Many learners (and even teachers) see maths as something to be memorised. But the
true nature of mathematics is not about rote learning. It’s about asking questions like
“Why does this work?” or “How can I use this idea in real life?” For example, when
children learn to multiply, it's not just about knowing that 5 × 3 = 15. It's about
understanding what multiplication means—like grouping items or repeated addition.
This deeper understanding is what makes mathematics powerful and useful.
