, Question 1
1.1.1 Identify two aspects of exclusion from education in this school community.
Language Barriers: Many learners experience difficulties when they are expected to
communicate in English, especially if it is not their home language. While they might
know the answers in their native language, they struggle to express themselves in
English, leading to feelings of frustration and exclusion.
Socioeconomic Challenges: A significant number of children come from
impoverished backgrounds, which can limit their access to learning resources,
extracurricular activities, and support outside school. This economic hardship can
hinder their overall educational experience and opportunities for growth.
1.1.2 What strategies does the teacher adopt to support learners and encourage
inclusion?
Facilitating Language Development: The teacher encourages learners to speak their
home language, Sepedi, and actively involves them in translating stories and songs.
This approach fosters a sense of belonging and ensures learners feel comfortable
expressing themselves.
Employing Diverse Teaching Methods: The teacher uses a variety of instructional
strategies such as movement-based activities, music, storytelling, puppetry, and
tactile exercises to cater to different learning styles. This variety helps address the
needs of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile learners.
Promoting Peer Learning: By mixing learners in peer teaching groups, the teacher
reduces social divisions and encourages collaboration among students from different
linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
Building Relationships with Parents: Home visits and workshops are used to
establish trust and open communication with parents, allowing teachers to
understand learners’ backgrounds better and involve families in their education.
Creating a Caring Classroom Environment: The teacher emphasizes respect,
compassion, and social interaction, encouraging learners to support and care for one
another, which fosters a positive and inclusive atmosphere.
