1. Define “colonialism” in your own words. (2 marks)

2. How does Maldonado-Torres explain the concept of coloniality? (2 marks)
According to Maldonado-Torres, coloniality is the ongoing influence of colonial systems
even after a country gains independence. It affects how knowledge, culture, education,
and power are structured, keeping old colonial ways in place.

3. Explain the difference between colonialism and coloniality. (2 marks)
Colonialism is the actual period of foreign control and rule. Coloniality, on the other
hand, refers to the lasting effects of that control—how colonial thinking and systems
continue even after political freedom is gained.

4. Sketch the sociohistorical background of colonialism and coloniality in the

6. How does the legacy of apartheid remain a structural element in postcolonial
