, TMS3731 Assignment 2 – 2025
Due Date: 29 May 2025
QUESTION 1: LESSON ACTIVITY DESIGN (50 Marks)
a) Lesson Topics and CAPS Reference
History Topic: The Mineral Revolution in South Africa
Grade 8, Term 2 – CAPS p. 55
Geography Topic: Economic Activities: Mining and the Environment
Grade 8, Term 3 – CAPS p. 44
Integration Explanation:
These two topics are closely connected. The History section introduces learners to the
Mineral Revolution’s historical significance—such as labour migration, urbanisation, and
racial segregation. The Geography component builds on this by analyzing how mining
activities continue to impact the South African economy and environment today. This
cross-curricular integration helps learners make connections between past events and
current realities, fostering critical thinking and a multidimensional view of mining’s role in
society.
b) School Context Description
The school is situated in a semi-rural area in Limpopo. Learners often face socio-
economic challenges, including limited access to technology and educational
resources. Class sizes are large, ranging from 45 to 50 learners, and learners come
from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. While there is one computer lab
and a mobile projector, internet access is unreliable. Most learners, however, own
basic smartphones and have access to WhatsApp, which can be used as a tool for
sharing resources and reinforcing learning.
