1.1.1 In your own words, define the term ‘literacy’.


Literacy can be described as the capacity to read, write, and effectively

interpret and produce meaning through language. It goes beyond just

recognizing letters and words. it includes understanding, interpreting, and

using language in various forms to interact meaningfully with the world.

(UNESCO, 2006). In South Africa, where educational disparities are a

concern, literacy is key to academic achievement and social empowerment

(DBE, 2011). It supports learners in becoming independent thinkers and

active participants in society, which is why fostering literacy from an early

age is essential.


1.1.2 In your own words, define the term ‘emergent literacy’?


Emergent literacy refers to the range of early skills and behaviours that

children display before they formally learn to read and write. These skills

develop naturally as children are exposed to spoken language, books, and

printed materials in their everyday environments(Whitehurst & Lonigan,
