1. Definition of Emotional Intelligence and Explanation of Its Core Components
(10 Marks)

Definition of Emotional Intelligence (EI):
Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to an individual’s ability to recognize, interpret, and
manage both their own emotions and those of others. According to Daniel Goleman
(1995), EI encompasses the ability to identify personal emotions, harness emotions to
facilitate thought, and manage emotional responses in oneself and in relationships. It
plays a vital role in interpersonal communication, self-regulation, and social
interaction—especially in educational settings where learners face diverse emotional
challenges.

Key Components of Emotional Intelligence:

 Self-Awareness
This is the ability to accurately perceive one’s emotions and understand how they
influence thoughts and behaviour. For example, in Thabo’s case, being aware of
his anxiety during group activities enables him to reflect on his responses and
seek support.

Self-Regulation
This involves managing disruptive emotions and impulses in healthy ways.
