, ADB1602 Assignment 2.

Question 1 (15 marks)

The Communication Process in the Scenario

The communication process consists of several key components: sender, message,
encoding, medium/channel, receiver, decoding, feedback, and noise. All these are
present in the scenario:

1. Sender: The CEO, Mrs Mokoena, initiates the communication.
2. Encoding: She translates her thoughts into spoken words to express her
instructions regarding changes to the lunch break.
3. Message: The content of the communication – reducing lunch breaks and
moving up the quitting time.
4. Medium/Channel: The message is delivered orally in a face-to-face meeting.
5. Receiver: Mr Sibiya, the supervisor, is the intended recipient of the message.
6. Decoding: Mr Sibiya interprets or makes sense of what the CEO says.
7. Feedback: His weak response, “Okay, Mrs Mokoena,” suggests limited or
hesitant feedback, possibly due to uncertainty or discomfort.
8. Noise: The CEO’s preoccupation with the phone call may be considered
psychological noise that affects her attentiveness and Mr Sibiya’s opportunity
to ask questions or clarify the message.

Thus, while communication occurs, it is not entirely effective due to lack of engagement
and feedback, highlighting the importance of clarity and confirmation in communication.
