Indigenous Knowledge refers to the wisdom, skills, and practices developed by local
communities over time through their close relationship with nature. This knowledge is
passed down from one generation to the next and is rooted in the cultural and
environmental experiences of a specific group.
1.1.3 Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) (2 Marks)
The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement, or CAPS, is an official South African
education policy document that details what content must be taught for each subject
and grade. It helps teachers by offering clear instructions on what to teach, how to
assess learners, and how to manage classroom time effectively.

1.2.1 Traditional Energy Sources (12 Marks)

Coal – used in traditional stoves for cooking and warmth.
Crop waste – used as biomass for generating heat.
These sources are often renewable and locally available, although some may have

These are instruments created and used by indigenous communities to express culture
and spirituality.
Examples include:
