Career Psychology
Question 1: Four Kinds of Plateaued Performers
(Based on Coetzee & Schreuder, 2024)
Career plateauing happens when an employee no longer sees growth or promotion in
their job. This can affect their motivation, performance, and attitude at work. The four
main types of plateaued performers are:
1. Contented Plateaued Performer
These workers are happy with their current job and are not looking for a promotion or
new challenges. They enjoy the routine, appreciate job security, and value a healthy
work-life balance. Although they are not growing upwards, they remain loyal and steady.
2. Unmotivated Plateaued Performer
This type feels stuck and bored at work. Because they don't see any future growth, they
lose interest and energy. They may put in minimal effort and become disengaged from
their responsibilities and team.
3. Productive Plateaued Performer
Even without moving up, these employees continue to work hard and deliver good
results. They take pride in mastering their job, often helping others through mentorship
or by taking on extra duties within their current level. Their motivation comes from
personal satisfaction rather than promotion.
4. Discouraged Plateaued Performer
These individuals are unhappy and frustrated with their lack of career progress. They
feel overlooked or stuck, which leads to low morale and dissatisfaction. Over time, this
can affect their mental well-being and work performance.
, QUESTION 2
After completing the Career Orientations Inventory in Appendix 1, my three dominant
career anchors, based on the highest average scores, are:
1. Service/Dedication to a Cause (SV)
This career anchor reflects a deep internal desire to make a meaningful difference in the
lives of others and society as a whole. It is driven by the value of altruism and a strong
sense of social responsibility.
Underlying values and motives:
I am motivated by work that aligns with my personal values and allows me to
contribute to causes greater than myself.
I find fulfillment in helping others, advocating for justice, or addressing social
issues.
I would prefer careers in NGOs, community outreach, education, healthcare, or
any field where my efforts positively impact others.
2. Autonomy/Independence (AU)
This anchor reflects a strong desire for freedom and self-direction in one’s career.
Individuals with this anchor prefer to define their own work, set their own schedules, and
operate independently.
Underlying values and motives:
I value flexibility, personal space, and the freedom to make my own decisions.
I am motivated by work that allows me to express creativity without rigid rules or
bureaucratic control.
