Title: Nationalism and Industrialisation in the 19th Century – A Student’s
Perspective

Imagine I am a student at the University of Heidelberg in Germany during the 1860s.
This is a time of big changes and new ideas. We hear about revolutions, fast trains, and
the growing sense of national pride. These topics spark many conversations in our
classrooms and cafés. In this reflection, I will share what I have learned about two major
forces shaping the 19th century: nationalism and industrialisation.

Understanding Nationalism and Industrialisation

Nationalism is more than just being proud of your country. It is the belief that people
who share a common language, culture, and history should have the right to rule
themselves. It brings people together with a strong sense of shared identity and
purpose. In many cases, this feeling becomes more important than loyalty to kings or
empires.

Industrialisation is about how economies and societies changed from farming-based
to machine-based production. It began in Britain in the late 1700s and quickly spread to
the rest of Europe. New inventions like the steam engine and spinning jenny made
production faster and cheaper. This led to the growth of factories, cities, and transport
systems like railways.

Where These Ideas Came From

Nationalism grew out of ideas from the Enlightenment, when thinkers like Rousseau
and Herder promoted individual freedom and national culture. The French Revolution
in 1789 added the idea that power should belong to the people, not just rulers. Later,
during the Napoleonic Wars, people across Europe started to feel more united in their
fight against outside rule, which helped nationalism grow stronger.
