Question 1 [10 marks]

How can we use CO₂ production to estimate an animal’s metabolic rate? Explain
two methods.

The metabolic rate indicates how much energy an animal uses to carry out basic
functions like breathing, moving, and digesting. When animals convert food into energy,
carbon dioxide (CO₂) is produced as a byproduct. By measuring the amount of CO₂
released, scientists can estimate how much energy the animal is using.

There are two main methods to measure this:

1. Closed Respirometry System:
In this method, the animal is placed in a sealed chamber with a known air
volume. As it breathes, it produces CO₂, which accumulates in the chamber. By
measuring how much CO₂ builds up over time, researchers can calculate the
animal's energy use. This technique is accurate and often used for small animals.
2. Open-flow Respirometry System:
Here, fresh air constantly flows through the chamber. The difference in CO₂
levels between the incoming and outgoing air shows how much CO₂ the animal
produces. This method allows continuous monitoring and is ideal for animals that
need steady airflow or for observing changes in real time.
