South African History of Education

Question 1.1

Explain how global schools spread in the Global South and Global North.
(10 Marks)

The spread of global schools in the Global North and Global South occurred under
different historical and socio-political circumstances, reflecting distinct motivations and
outcomes.

In the Global North, schools evolved naturally as part of societal development linked to
the Enlightenment, industrialization, and the rise of the nation-state. Governments
recognized the need for an educated workforce to support expanding industries and
economies. As a result, education systems were structured to promote literacy,
numeracy, and civic responsibility. Schools also played a central role in shaping
national identities and preparing individuals for participation in political and economic
systems. The educational frameworks in these regions were largely internally driven
and reflected local cultures, philosophies, and governance models.

In the Global South, however, the spread of global schools was largely a result of
colonialism. European colonial powers introduced Western-style schools to their
colonies, not with the goal of uplifting local populations, but to serve colonial
administrative and economic interests. These schools prioritized Eurocentric
knowledge, values, and languages, systematically sidelining indigenous knowledge
systems, traditions, and languages. The focus was often on training a small elite group
to assist in colonial governance rather than providing broad access to meaningful
education for the wider population.

, Following independence, many countries in the Global South retained the colonial
structures of education. Although some reforms were implemented, the underlying
Eurocentric models persisted. This has led to continued challenges in aligning
education with local contexts, cultures, and development goals. Today, debates around
decolonizing education reflect the ongoing efforts to transform these inherited
systems into inclusive and culturally relevant institutions.
