1. Elaborate on the concept "ecology of knowledge" as used in the text. (5 Marks)
The term "ecology of knowledge" highlights the importance of recognizing and valuing a
diversity of knowledge systems. Rather than promoting a single, dominant (often
Western) way of understanding the world, it encourages the inclusion of indigenous,
experiential, and local knowledges alongside scientific and academic ones. This
concept promotes fairness in the way knowledge is created and shared, emphasizing
that all cultures have valid contributions to make toward human understanding and
progress. It seeks to dismantle hierarchies in knowledge by promoting mutual respect
and coexistence among various epistemologies.
2. Differentiate between colonialism and coloniality. (10 Marks)
Colonialism refers to the historical process where powerful nations, mainly
European, took control of territories in Africa, Asia, and elsewhere. It involved
direct rule, economic exploitation, cultural suppression, and administrative
domination. African societies under colonialism were governed by foreign powers
who imposed their language, laws, religion, and systems of education with the
aim of benefiting the colonizers.
Coloniality, on the other hand, is the continued influence of colonial structures even
after independence. Though formal colonial rule may have ended, many African
countries still operate under systems that reflect colonial thinking. This includes
educational content that centers Western knowledge, societal values shaped by colonial
ideologies, and persistent economic or social inequalities
, rooted in colonial systems. Coloniality is subtle but deeply embedded in
institutions, and it continues to limit the decolonization of minds, identities, and
knowledge.
