QUESTION 1: Community Engagement Strategy for Mamelodi Mall Development
As the corporate communication professional for On the Ground Development, the
successful planning of the proposed mall in Mamelodi will depend heavily on strategic
and inclusive community engagement. Drawing on insights from the webinar "Shopping
centres – the epitome of collaboration", this approach will integrate key concepts from
postmodernism, the constitutive role of communication, and paradigmatic shifts in
corporate communication to ensure community collaboration, trust, and project
sustainability.
1. Embracing Postmodernism in Community Engagement
Postmodernism in corporate communication emphasizes diversity, decentralization of
power, and the inclusion of multiple perspectives. In a culturally diverse and
economically stratified community like Mamelodi, adopting a postmodern approach
means recognizing the community as co-creators of the development process rather
than passive recipients of a predesigned project.
To implement this:
I will organize interactive planning workshops, where local residents, small
business owners, youth groups, and civil society stakeholders can contribute to
shaping the mall’s purpose, design, and services.
