Essay Title: Women’s Entrapment and Escape in Nervous Conditions
In Nervous Conditions, Tsitsi Dangarembga explores the lives of women in 1960s
Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), a society where patriarchy, colonialism, and tradition
intersect to shape the experiences of women. In the opening paragraph, the protagonist
Tambudzai (Tambu) frames her story as one of "escape," but immediately complicates
this notion by acknowledging the state of “entrapment” that preceded and often
coexisted with it. The novel, therefore, is not a straightforward narrative of liberation, but
a nuanced portrayal of how different women negotiate their identities and aspirations
under oppressive structures. Through the characters of Tambu, Maiguru, Lucia, and
Nyasha, Dangarembga illustrates the theme of female entrapment and the varying
degrees to which the characters resist or escape it.
