, QUESTION 1: Language teaching in a multicultural and multilingual context (20
marks)

1.1 Three key challenges in a multilingual and multicultural classroom (6 marks)

As a Home Language (HL) teacher in a South African Grade 10 class with
learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, there are several
challenges that can impact effective teaching and learning:

Firstly, language barriers may hinder comprehension and participation. While
the HL curriculum assumes proficiency in the language of instruction (e.g.,
English HL), learners from non-English backgrounds, such as isiZulu, Sesotho, or
immigrant languages, may struggle to understand complex vocabulary or
instructions. This affects their ability to express themselves clearly and engage
fully with texts.

Secondly, cultural differences can influence how learners interpret language and
literature. For instance, certain idioms, metaphors, or literary references may
not resonate equally with all learners, particularly those unfamiliar with Western
or dominant cultural norms embedded in the curriculum. This creates a
disconnect between the learner’s background and the learning material.

Thirdly, assessment fairness and equity can become a concern. Standardised
assessments may unintentionally favour learners from dominant linguistic
groups, disadvantaging those who may be equally capable but less fluent in the
HL language. This creates pressure on both learners and teachers to ensure
that all learners are fairly evaluated.

1.2 Three inclusive strategies and justification (9 marks)
