, 1. How would you intend to use empathy to create respect and trust in a helping relationship
with Faith? (2 marks)
In order to build respect and trust, I would use empathic engagement, which is the act
of understanding and confirming Faith's feelings of loss, depression, and stress. I
would actively listen, use reflective statements such as "It sounds like you're feeling
overwhelmed," and avoid judgment. Being consistent, confidential,
and reliable also makes Faith emotionally comfortable, and that builds a trusting
relationship where she feels heard and appreciated.
2. Five various ways of listening to listen actively to Faith's situation. (5 marks)
Active Listening – It is a method of providing Faith single-minded attention, maintaining
eye contact, nodding, and using verbal cues like "I see" or "Tell me more."
Example: While Faith is discussing the loss of her job, I would listen carefully without
interrupting.
Empathic Listening – Placing focus on Faith's emotions, understanding her perspective,
and acknowledging her feelings.
Example: "No wonder you are so lonely after the divorce and job loss."
Reflective Listening – Restating or repeating her words to convey understanding and
allow for clarification.
Example: "You're saying that you feel you've lost your identity after the divorce?"
Selective Listening – Focusing on specific issues such as lack of support, emotional pain,
or financial struggles.
Example: Paying attention to her concern that her husband is
not contributing to the financial upkeep of the children.
Critical Listening – Picking up on the underlying issues in what Faith is communicating,
especially if there are safety or trauma issues.
Example: Picking up on the signs of possible clinical depression or social
withdrawal which need to be followed up on.
3. Social worker as an enabler: How will you assist Faith to identify her needs? (3 marks)
As an enabler, I will help Faith by:
Creating a comfortable setting in which she feels safe to express her feelings and
concerns.
Asking empowering, open-ended questions like "What support do you feel you need right
now?"
Affirming her strengths, such as her resilience and commitment to her children, and
helping her to identify them.
