Section A: Introduction
Personal Statement
My name is Thabo Mokoena, a first-year student pursuing a
Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of South Africa. I have
a strong interest in understanding how historical events have
shaped modern African society and global relations.
Portfolio Purpose
The purpose of this portfolio is to demonstrate my learning
progress in the HSY1511 module. It includes my reflections,
planning assessments, research activities, and writing tasks that
have helped me understand Africa’s historical significance and
develop essential academic skills.

Course Overview: HSY1511 Course Objectives
The HSY1511 course offers an essential foundation in
understanding the historical developments that have shaped both

, Africa and the broader world from the 17th century to the early
21st century. This period is crucial for examining the rise and
fall of empires, colonialism, resistance movements,
independence struggles, and the ongoing processes of
globalization and socio-political transformation.
One of the core objectives of the module is to equip students
with the ability to recognize and analyze significant historical
changes over four centuries. Through this, we learn to identify
how global events such as the Atlantic slave trade, European
imperial expansion, the industrial revolution, and both world
wars influenced the African continent. We also explore how
Africa itself has shaped world history—challenging the
misconception of Africa as a passive recipient of global forces.
The course fosters a deep appreciation for the critical place of
Africa in the broader context of global history. It highlights
African agency, resilience, and innovation, showing how
Africans contributed to and resisted historical processes such as
colonization, migration, and modernization. This objective helps
students deconstruct Eurocentric narratives and understand
Africa's complex and diverse histories from African
perspectives.
Additionally, HSY1511 introduces students to several recurring
themes in historical inquiry, such as power, identity, culture,
resistance, and change. By examining these themes in the
African and global context, students develop the ability to draw
connections between past and present, gaining insight into the
historical roots of contemporary African society.
