This document details the rise of African nationalism, particularly in the context of the Gold Coast (now Ghana), and its role in ending colonial rule. It traces the origins of African nationalism to the arbitrary division of Africa during the Scramble for Africa, which led to the rise of movements aimed at independence. The document discusses key figures like Kwame Nkrumah, who formed the Convention People's Party (CPP) and led resistance against British colonial rule, leading to the Gold Coast's independence in 1957. The document also explores the role of educated elites, trade unions, and the influence of World War II in fostering nationalist sentiments. It highlights the importance of Pan-Africanism, the contributions of the educated middle class, and the success of mass movements in achieving self-rule. Additionally, it covers the events leading to Ghana's independence, with Nkrumah's leadership inspiring other African nations in their struggles for freedom.

• Gold Coast = 1st African colony to achieve independence in 1957
• After independence → Gold Coast changed its name to Ghana (was the name of a
powerful empire in the Middle Ages)
