Question 1
1. Academic Integrity
Read the following scenario carefully and reflect on the questions provided.
You are preparing assignment 2 for HRD3701. The deadline is approaching, and you are feeling
overwhelmed. A few of your peers have indicated that they used A.I tools, such as Chat GPT, to create
answers to the assessment to save time and improve their marks. You know that A.I can help with
creating answers, summarising and restructuring content, but you are unsure how much reliance on A.I
is acceptable. Additionally, you found some answers from online blogs and articles that are aligned
with the assessment activities. You cannot decide if you should use A.I or just copy the online
information into your document.
Reflect on the following:
Introduction
As a Human Resource Development (HRD) student, I am constantly faced with decisions that test
my commitment to academic integrity—especially when under pressure. The growing accessibility
of artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT, along with readily available online content,
presents both opportunities and ethical challenges in completing assessments. In this reflection, I
explore the dilemma of using AI and online sources when preparing for an assignment under stress,
and consider how to navigate these tools responsibly while upholding the principles of academic
honesty expected in the HRD3701 module and by the South African Board for People Practices
(SABPP).
1.1. Why is academic integrity important for HRD (and HRM) students? Think about the
SABPP's standard for ethical conduct when you provide this answer.
Academic integrity is essential for HRD and HRM students because it lays the foundation for ethical
and professional behaviour in both academic and workplace environments. According to the South
African Board for People Practices (SABPP) standard for ethical conduct, HR professionals are
expected to demonstrate honesty, accountability, and integrity in all aspects of their work. By
upholding academic integrity during our studies, we develop the ethical mindset and credibility
required to make responsible decisions, build trust with stakeholders, and model professional
conduct in future human resource practices.
