QUESTION 1

1.1 Ubuntu and Its Presence in My Culture (10 Marks)
Ubuntu is an African philosophy that emphasizes community, humanity, and
interconnectedness. It is often summarized by the phrase "Umuntu ngumuntu
ngabantu," meaning "a person is a person through other people." This concept fosters
values such as compassion, respect, and collective responsibility.

In my culture, Ubuntu is strongly embraced. For example, in times of bereavement,
community members come together to support the grieving family by providing food,
emotional support, and financial contributions. Similarly, traditional communal work,
such as harvesting crops or building houses, exemplifies Ubuntu, as people assist one
another without expecting monetary compensation.

1.2 Phonetic Representation of Selected Sounds (8 Marks)
(a) /a/ – Open front unrounded vowel [ɑ]
(b) /e/ – Close-mid front unrounded vowel [e]
(c) /b/ – Voiced bilabial plosive [b]
(d) /k/ – Voiceless velar plosive [k]

1.3 Sound Changes in African Languages (7 Marks)
(a) Affricatisation – This occurs when a plosive sound changes into an affricate. For
example, in Zulu, the /t/ sound can shift to /tʃ/, as in "ithanga" (pumpkin) becoming
"ichanga" in some dialects.

(b) Elision – The omission of a sound in connected speech. In Xhosa, the vowel in
"ukuza" (to come) may be dropped in rapid speech, resulting in "k'za."
