Question 1: Comparative and International education
1.1 Define the concepts below in your own words to demonstrate your
understanding of the relationship between them and the field of
Comparative & International Education (CIE).
1.1.1 Heterodoxy
Comparative and International Education (CIE) examines education
systems globally to identify similarities and differences for improving
educational outcomes. Heterodoxy, a key concept in CIE, refers to
alternative perspectives that challenge dominant educational
ideologies. It plays a crucial role in decolonising education by promoting
diverse educational approaches (Seroto, Davids & Wolhuter, 2020).
Heterodoxy in education involves questioning traditional norms and
advocating for inclusive approaches that recognize indigenous
knowledge systems. In the Global South, colonial influences have
shaped education systems, necessitating reforms to incorporate local
knowledge and contexts. Seroto, Davids, and Wolhuter (2020) argue
that decolonising education requires critically analyzing curricula to
ensure relevance and inclusivity.
Globally, heterodoxy is evident in various education systems. India
integrates traditional knowledge with modern reforms, while Tanzania
has embraced African socialist principles to move away from colonial
education structures (Seroto, Davids & Wolhuter, 2020). Similarly,
, Turkey and Chile have implemented curriculum reforms to reflect local
histories and cultures.
Heterodoxy also influences higher education by fostering diverse
research and knowledge production. In Iran, debates on balancing
religious education with modern disciplines highlight the tensions
between orthodox and heterodox perspectives (Seroto, Davids &
Wolhuter, 2020). Many universities now adopt pluralistic approaches to
research and teaching.
Brindhamani and Marisamy (2016) emphasize that heterodoxy fosters
innovation and critical thinking by challenging dominant narratives. It
promotes inclusive, adaptable education systems responsive to local
and global challenges.
In conclusion, heterodoxy is vital in CIE, advocating for alternative
perspectives that challenge traditional ideologies. It supports
decolonisation, curriculum reform, and inclusive higher education,
ensuring education systems reflect diverse cultural and social contexts
(Seroto, Davids & Wolhuter, 2020; Brindhamani & Marisamy, 2016).
1.1.2 Heteregeneity
Heterogeneity refers to diversity and differences within education
systems, including variations in culture, language, policies, and teaching
methods. In Comparative and International Education (CIE),
heterogeneity is an important concept because it helps scholars and
policymakers understand how education systems adapt to different
social, historical, and economic contexts (Seroto, Davids & Wolhuter,
2020).
