, SECTION A

QUESTION 1

A security official may invoke the principle of private defense (also known as self-
defense) when there is an imminent threat of unlawful harm to themselves or
another person, provided that the force used is reasonable and necessary to
avert the threat (Snyman, 2014). Under this principle, the security official must
genuinely believe that the harm is immediate or unavoidable, and there must be
no other practical way to prevent the danger. The response should be
proportionate: excessive force that goes beyond what is needed to protect life or
property is not justified (Burchell, 2013).

For example, if a trespasser points a firearm at a security guard with a clear
intention to shoot, and the guard has no avenue of retreat, the guard may take
defensive action. This could involve drawing a weapon and using the minimum
level of force required to neutralize the threat, thereby preventing serious harm.
OR

For example, if a security guard is confronted by an intruder attempting to assault
them or damage company property, the guard has the right to use reasonable
force to stop the intruder, such as restraining or detaining the intruder until law
enforcement arrives. However, if the force used is excessive, such as using a
weapon in a situation where it’s unnecessary, the guard could be held legally
responsible.
