LEARNING UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION TO
COMMUNICATION
1.1 For the purpose of this module, we define communication as
“the sharing of meaning from one entity to another”. With this
definition in mind, discuss the African perspective of
communication. Include examples of types of communication
illustrating the African perspective of communication. (3)
The African Perspective of Communication
Communication, as defined in the module, is “the sharing of
meaning from one entity to another.” From an African
perspective, communication is not only about exchanging words
but is deeply embedded in cultural practices, traditions, values,
and social structures. In many African societies, communication
is often viewed as a holistic and relational process that connects
individuals to the community, the environment, and even the
spiritual world. It is seen as a dynamic and inclusive process that
involves multiple layers of meaning, including verbal and non-
verbal elements.
1. Ubuntu Philosophy and Communicative Values
In African cultures, Ubuntu (often translated as "I am because
we are") is central to understanding communication. It
emphasizes the interconnectedness of all people. Ubuntu teaches

and this interconnectedness shapes how they communicate.
Communication in this context is not just an exchange of
information but a way of fostering mutual respect, building
community, and ensuring the well-being of the collective.
Example: In many African communities, conversations often
include proverbs, storytelling, and rituals, which help maintain
unity and convey wisdom. An elder might use a proverb to
communicate life lessons to the younger generation, reinforcing
collective values such as respect, solidarity, and harmony.
2. Oral Tradition and Storytelling
One of the most notable features of African communication is
the emphasis on oral tradition. Storytelling is a key means of
communication and knowledge transmission in African
societies. Elders, griots (traditional storytellers), and community
leaders use stories, songs, and poems to share history, morals,
values, and identity.
Example: The Griot tradition in West Africa is an example of
oral communication where a griot serves as the repository of the
community's history, culture, and genealogies. They use songs,
music, and storytelling to communicate the values, struggles,
and triumphs of the community, passing them down to future
generations.
3. Non-verbal Communication
In many African societies, non-verbal communication plays a
significant role in conveying meaning. Body language, facial
expressions, gestures, and silence are often used in tandem with
