LEARNING UNIT 1: INTRODUCING COMMUNICATION
1.1 Explain the different components and the relationship
between the components of the intuitive model of
communication. (5)
1.2 Identify and briefly discuss the seven components of The
Shannon-Weaver communication model. (5) [10]
1.1 The Intuitive Model of Communication
The intuitive model of communication emphasizes the
dynamic and often unspoken aspects of how people interact,
focusing on the natural flow of communication. This model
helps understand how communication typically works in
everyday life, acknowledging that communication is not always
linear or structured. The components of this model can be
outlined as follows:
1. Sender: The individual or group who has a message or
information to convey. The sender is the originator of the
communication process.
2. Receiver: The individual or group who receives the
message. The receiver is the target audience for the sender's
message.
3. Message: This refers to the information, idea, or thought
being communicated. It can be verbal or non-verbal and is
transmitted by the sender to the receiver.

, 4. Medium: The channel or method through which the
message is conveyed. This could be face-to-face
conversation, written communication, email, phone, body
language, etc.
5. Feedback: The response that the receiver gives to the
sender, which indicates whether the message was
understood or not. Feedback can be verbal, non-verbal, or
even emotional, and it helps the sender gauge the
effectiveness of their communication.
6. Context: The environment or situation in which
communication takes place. Context includes factors like
physical space, time, and social context, and it can
influence how the message is received and interpreted.
7. Noise: Any factor that disrupts the clear transmission of the
message. Noise can be physical (like background sound),
psychological (like stress or distractions), or semantic
(misunderstanding of the message).
The Relationship Between the Components
In the intuitive model, all of these components interact
dynamically. The sender initiates the process by encoding a
message that is transmitted via a medium. The receiver
decodes the message and gives feedback to the sender, which is
essential for understanding whether the communication was
successful. The context of the interaction plays a significant role
in interpreting the message, while noise can interfere at any
stage of the process, distorting the intended communication.
Communication is therefore seen as a cyclical, ongoing process,
where feedback and context constantly influence how the
message is constructed, transmitted, and received.
