1. About your personal page
We asked you to create a page about a sub-community of your choice, linked to one of the 9
groups.
1.1 You do not need to include a copy of your page here – we will have a look at it
online. However, we will need the following details so that we will be able to find your
page -
The title of your page: South African Farm Attacks: A Community of Survivors
Author’s name and surname (your name and surname):
The group that your page is a part of (e.g. Carceral communities): Rural Communities
1.2 What did you like most about working on your page? (Write a few sentences below.)
After reading through many articles on my community of interest I was exposed to many
different perspectives and issues related to the farm attacks. Thus, I was able to gain a very
objective view of the issue and better understand the context of these attacks. I enjoyed being
able to attain a comprehensive bias free understanding on a community that I did not was not
well informed on beforehand.
1.3 What did you like least about working on your page? (Write a few sentences below.)
The nature of my community made it difficult and heart-breaking to research. Hearing the
horrific stories and viewing explicit photographs of the victims was disturbing and upsetting.
Additionally, viewing the hatred and racism expressed by this community and wider society
on social media has saddened me as I believe in the philosophy of Ubuntu and hate to see my
country in this state.
1.4 How could your page be further improved? (Write a few sentences below.)
Sharing the personal experience of these survivor’s post-farm attack will improve my page.
This is because it will give students insight into what it is like to be a farm attack survivor
beyond just being a statistic. I can do this by sharing videos of personal accounts, quotes and
photographs. I want to highlight the fact that these are real people and real traumatic
experiences that are being downplayed or overlooked by the government.
