Signs- practical meaning, give instruction
Symbols- a mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object,
function, or process
Ideograms- a character (made of geometric shapes) symbolising the idea of a thing
without indicating the sounds used to say it
Pictograms- pictorial symbol for word/phrase; displays meaning through photos
Metaphor- is the use of an image for something it does not literally denote
Personal identity
Personal identity- how we express ourselves through our physicality and cultural eg.
clothes/body language/language/ food/ hair styles etc
Allegory- a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden
meaning, typically a moral or political one.
Stereotypes- a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular
type of person or thing.
Propaganda- information, especially of a biassed or misleading nature, used to
promote a political cause or point of view.
Bias- prejudice for or against one person or group; unfair
Irony- opposite of what is meant or expected
Parody- humorous imitation
Business terms
Batch Production- The manufacture of a specific number of products
Biophilic design- strengthens the connection to nature by means of natural material,
light, textures and patterns.
Branding- the process of creating a distinct identity for a business in the mind of your
target audience and consumers
Consumption culture- is a form of capitalism in which the economy is focused on the
selling and spending of money.
Cultural Bias and stereotyping- The pre-disposition or partiality towards a certain
viewpoint without considering alternative viewpoints; Clichéd and generalised views

services to comply with principles of social, economic, and ecological sustainability
so as not to jeopardise the ability of future generations to provide.
