SOD Ch. 4&5
When we make wrong decisions to act independently of God and violate our new
natures and our new identity what action must we take? - ✔️✔️Repentance and turn
away from that sin and turn back to God

What can happen when you accept and believe the truth that your old self has died and
been replaced by a new self, controlled by a new nature? - ✔️✔️We can be freed from
Satan and our sins

Our old sinful selves with their sinful natures were cruel, self-serving skippers under the
authority of ________ himself. By God's grace, we have a new -_________- and a new
skipper: Our new selves are powered by the divine nature of __________ __________.
- ✔️✔️Satan, admiral, Jesus Christ

What's the difference between being darkness and being in darkness? What does this
tell you about yourself before you knew Jesus? (see Ch 4 Asgn #1 question 7 answer) -
✔️✔️Darkness was our nature as unbelievers. It is what we were, darkness. Now as a
believer we are a new nature in Christ, but still live in a dark world.

What's the difference between being light and being in light? What does this tell you, a
believer, about your role in the world? (see Ch 4 Asgn #1 question 8 answer) -
✔️✔️God changed our basic nature from darkness to light. It is our nature now. A
person who doesn't know Jesus can be IN and amongst the light by coming to a church
service or hang around Christians, but that does not give them a new nature of light, just
because they are around it, They would need to surrender their lives to Christ and
repent of their sins to be the light and no longer just live IN the light. A believers roll in
the world is to be a light in a dark world and bring a ray of hope to those who are still in
darkness that they can be saved and rescued through repentance and faith in Jesus.

What's the difference between being a saint who sins rather than being a sinner? -
✔️✔️Our position in Christ is settled, we are no longer a sinner. But, our daily action,
often marked by failures and disobedience, disturb the harmony of our relationship with
God.

Before you came to Christ, you were dead in sin, subject to Satan's power, and living
completely to fulfill sinful lusts and desires (Eph 2:1-3). So when you came into
relationship with God through your new birth in Christ Jesus, you didn't add a new divine
nature to your old sinful nature.

Does that mean you are now sinless? Explain: - ✔️✔️Sin and Satan are still around,
and they are strong and appealing. But because of the crucifixion of the old self, sin's
power over us is broken, we are no longer under any obligation to serve sin, to obey sin
or to respond to sin. It's our choice now what we yield to, the temptation or obey the
Holy Spirit. We will still have a choice to sin or not.

We sin when we make a __________ decision to allow __________ to act
independently of God. - ✔️✔️willful, ourselves

So why do we live as if our old skippers are still in control? - ✔️✔️Because everything
we learned before we became Christians was programmed into our brain.

What habits and patterns of thinking that you learned from the world still influences how
you act? - ✔️✔️That what you have done will haunt you for the rest of your life

When you were born again, your ______ self died and your ______ self came to life.
But your _________ (your previously learned independence) remained. Now as a
Christian you are no longer "in the _______" or spiritually dead. You are in _______.
But even though you are not in the ________, you may still walk according to the
_______. You may still act independently of God by saying _______ to the _______
and _______ programmed into your _________ by the world you lived in. - ✔️✔️old,
new, flesh, flesh, Christ, flesh, flesh, yes, patterns, habits, mind

Whose responsibility is it to keep the flesh and its deeds from dominating your life? -
✔️✔️Yourself

When you received Christ, the power of sin to dominate you was _______. You no
longer have to ______, but sin still strongly appeals to your flesh,________ you to act
independently of God. It is _______ responsibility to not let sin reign in your life. -
✔️✔️broken, sin, tempting, your

According to Romans 7:22-23, where does your desire to do what's right come from?
(see Ch 4 Asgn #3 question 3 answer) - ✔️✔️MY NEW SELF where my sin and God's
spirit are joined.

Where does sin attack in an attempt to keep you from doing right? (see Ch 4 Asgn #3
question 4 answer) - ✔️✔️MY FLESH (my previously learned independence, which
continues to tempt me to rebel against God)

Where do these opponents - your new self and your flesh - wage war? (see Ch 4 Asgn
#3 question 5 answer) - ✔️✔️MY MIND
