o The digestive system breaks down larger
food molecules into smaller molecules
which can be absorbed into the blood
stream.

, Functions
o Oesphohagus – a muscular tube that
pushes food down into the stomach.
o stomach – squeezes and relaxes to mix
food with gastric juices and acid to break it
down.
o Small intestine – absorbs nutrients and
water from food.
o Villi – digested food is absorbed into the
blood through the wall of the small intestine.
o Large intestine – water and salts are
absorbed from undigested food, and it
becomes nearly solid.
o Rectum – where faeces is stored.
o Anus – where faeces pass out of the body.
o Liver – produces bile, converts glucose into
glycogen and stores it, stores iron and
vitamins, detoxifies blood.
o Gall bladder – stores bile which helps to
break down fat and neutralizes acid from
the stomach.
o Pancreas – produces insuline and
glucagon, and releases digestive enzymes
which continues to digest food.
o Appendix – has no function.
