Analysis of poem
1. my meisie’s into MXit Notice (let op) the use of
omission (elisie) where it is
supposed to (veronderstel om)
read:
“My meisie is into MXit.”
This contributes (dra by) to the
rhythm (ritme) of the poem and
emulates (boots na) that of the
poem, Sproeireën by
Opperman, which the subtitle
refers to.
MXit used to be a social
networking app (toepassing),
similar (soortgelyk) to WhatsApp.
The word “into” is a form of
slang (slengtaal).
m-alliterasie
2. my pel speel Skype By mentioning (deur te noem) his
girlfriend and now his friend, the
speaker makes it seem (laat dit
lyk) as if he has a lot of
contacts or people in his life and
these people use various
(verskeie) social media apps
(toepassings).
Notice the lack of punctutation
(leestekengebruik) in this
stanza: only the social
networking apps have capital

, letters (hoofletters) to further
(verder) emphasize
(beklemtoon) their importance
(belangrikheid).
The use of the word “pel” is a
form of slang (slengtaal).
s-alliterasie

3. ek vriend 100e op Facebook Now he mentions (noem) himself
and how involved (betrokke) he
is on social media.
The word “vriend” is used here
as a verb, which is in essence a
form of Anglicism (anglisisme)
as it refers to (verwys na) the
English verb and action of
“friending” someone on
Facebook. The proper Afrikaans
word for it would be “bevriend”,
but this of course (natuurlik)
would be far too formal for this
poem and it would also interfere
(meng in) with the rhythm
(ritme).
The number “100e” is the first
number to indicate (aan te dui)
the countless (ontelbare)
amount of people who use
social media.
4. en tweet my twak op Twitter “twak” refers to nonsense, so
the speaker is just tweeting for
the sake of it and not because he
has something important
(belangrik) to say.
t-alliterasie serves (dien) to
make the poem sonorous
(klankryk) and to place special
emphasis (klem) on these
specific words.

5. daar is miljoene … miljoene op The ellipsis (ellips) is used to
Gmail reiterate (beklemtoon) the fact
(feit) that there are millions of
people on Gmail, as can be
seen with the repetition
(herhaling) of the word
“miljoene” as well.

Afrikaans First Additional Language Book Summaries and Exams for Grades 8 - 12

I completed my BA Afrikaans Dutch and Honor degrees, as well as my teaching degree, all Cum Laude. I have 17 years of teaching and tutoring experience and translate the work my students are given, to English for them because this way, it puts them in a better position to obtain the best possible Afrikaans mark they can get. We all know how frustrating it is when that one subject pulls down your entire average: don't let that subject be Afrikaans any longer with my help!
