his detailed worksheet covers the biodiversity and classification of microorganisms with a special focus on viruses, bacteria, protists, and fungi. It provides in-depth explanations and visuals that simplify complex concepts for students, making it a perfect tool for mastering the subject matter. Key highlights include: Introduction to Microorganisms: Overview of viruses, bacteria, protists, and fungi, with size comparisons and their respective roles in ecosystems. Microbiology: Understanding the scope of the study of microorganisms and their presence in various environments such as water, soil, and even inside rocks. Daily Impact of Microorganisms: How microbes influence diseases, food production, decomposition, and their integral role in food chains. Detailed Sections Include: Viruses: Structure, life cycle, and reproduction with a focus on their parasitic nature and how they "hijack" host cells. Bacteria: Structure, types of reproduction (binary fission, conjugation, budding, and endospore formation), and their role in health and diseases. Protista: Classification into Protozoa, Algae, and Slime molds, with structural details and functions of cell organelles. Fungi: Explanation of molds and their reproduction, with examples such as bread mold (Rhizopus). This worksheet is easy to follow and comes with diagrams to support the content. It's designed to ensure learners can grasp key topics in biodiversity and classification without difficulty. Ideal for preparing for exams or as a reference guide throughout the academic year.

Biodiversity & Classification of Microorganisms
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

• A micro-organism / microbe is an organism that is microscopic (can only be seen
through a microscope).
• These include:
o Viruses – from 0,01 µm to 0,1 µm (1000 µm = 1 mm)
o Bacteria – from 0,1 µm to 5 µm
o Protista
o Fungi

• The study of micro-organisms is called microbiology.
• Micro-organisms live almost everywhere on earth. In water, including hot springs,
the ocean floor, deep inside rocks and even in the dessert.
• Micro-organisms play a daily role in:
o Diseases
o Food production
o Decomposing (decaying) of dead organic matter (food, sewage, etc.)
o Important part of food chains

, SCIENCE CENTRE LESSON 1a

VIRUSES
• Viruses are inert / dormant = only active when they are inside living cells.
• Therefore, they are considered to be non-living.
• ALL viruses are pathogenic / parasites = since they cause diseases.
• Viruses only have one function, and that is to reproduce.
• Viruses are transported passively by air, water, physical touch, body fluids and
food.

STRUCTURE:
o Viruses are extremely small and
are only visible under an electron
microscope.
o The body consist of
- a protein coat /
capsid which enclose
- a nucleic acid: DNA
OR RNA (never both)
o Shapes range from cylindrical to
spherical.

o Bacteriophage (a virus that infects & kill bacteria):
