ASSIGNMENT 6- 23 AUGUST 2019

Brainwashing
In this paragraph I will be answering the following questions: Is brainwashing real? and is it
something specific to NRMs? My opinion on the matter of brainwashing, is that brainwashing is an
extremely commonly used phenomena that has been and is being used.

Brooke Hill posted an article about cartoon brainwashing on the 21 April 2017, where she mentioned
that most people see cartoons as harmless, however “cartoons have [been] brainwashed many kids
through FBI influence, subliminal messages, and war propaganda.” (Brooke Hill, 2017). Read the
article here: https://prezi.com/wenpmgdb7dtx/cartoon-brainwashing/

Another example of brainwashing would be Military Brainwashing as mentioned by J ago Corry on 11
September 2018. The UK has been criticised multiple times for advertising military life as a greater
option, these adverts are played in targeted areas such as pubs, gyms and other youth orientated
areas to requite young impressionable youth to join the military. Corry mentioned “ [T]hat our
government puts military expansion over the interest of ordinary people” ( Jago Corry, 2018). Read
article here: http://www.stopwar.org.uk/index.php/news-comment/3130-military-brainwashing-
must-stop

Media is also an outlet that uses brainwashing as one of its main techniques, Elena Blanco
mentioned in an article for Psychology Today ( https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/brain-
chemistry/201803/the-art-brainwashing) that whenever we use of devices we are presented with
several persuasive advertisements and articles about products and services. These are not as
convincing and persuasive as they are a brainwashing technique to e arn profit.

Schools and universities have allegedly been brainwashing students through curriculum about
religion, politics and social standards. A survey on debate.org (https://www.debate.org/opinions/do-
schools-brainwash-kids-by-using-curriculum) 81% of people agree that brainwashing takes place in
lessons.

Brainwashing – The Peoples Temple
Brainwashing in the Peoples Temple is still debated today. I believe brainwashing was evident as the
charismatic leader Jim Jones event mentioned himself that “I can have nearly 1,000 people kill
themselves because I tell them to.” (Jones,na) I believe Jones started the Peoples Temple not for
religious purposes, Jones wanted to be a leader and revolutionary, he wanted people to need him
and live for him. That is what Jones charisma and way with words aided him in brainwashing his
congregation. See here: https://www.rt.com/usa/410257-jonestown-peoples-temple-massacre/
actually statements from members of The Peoples Temple where the recall the ordeal and discuss
the brainwashing which they underwent. As stated by Kyle McCloy in his article
