Define the term ‘organization’ and briefly describe the five basic parts of an organization.

❖ According to Esterhuyzen (2015:4) organization can be regarded as “a consciously
coordinated social unit composed of two or more people that function on a relative
continuous basis to achieve a common goal or set of goals”.
❖ Five basic parts of an organization are (Esterhuyzen (2015:4)):
Strategic apex: Top management, board of directors and shareholders.
Operating core: All workers at the floor level or general workers.
Middle line: All managers and supervisors.
Support staff: All employees that deliver support to any other part of the organization.
Techno-structure: These are the specialist who are able to influence and affect the
work of others as a result of their areas of expertise.

Explain the importance of communication in terms of safety management. [4]
Good communication reduces employees’ feelings of anger, fear and frustration regarding
safety matters, among other things, and proper communication methods should be used by
supervisors in order to get management’s safety goals and message across. Management must
ensure that the goals and content of the organization’s safety efforts are clearly communicated
to the safety supervisor who should then communicate this information to their department or
team (Esterhuyzen (2015:13).


QUESTION 3

Explain the difference between biological, chemical and physical hazards by defining and
briefly discussing each of these terms and providing examples of each. [12]
Describe the three groups of hazards by providing definitions and examples for each of
these groups [10]

❖ Biological hazards are those types of hazards made up of pathogens. These are
organisms that can cause disease in all living things. Examples of biological hazards
are: Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi and moulds, and Worms and parasites.
❖ Impact and control of biological hazards
Because of the wide range of biological hazards, the effect and consequences of exposure
depend on the nature of the biological hazard. The impact of exposure to biological
hazards on employees in an organization can vary from extensive medical treatment to
absenteeism and subsequent disruption in production. These all lead to financial losses
and damage to the organization’s reputation.
❖ Employees can be exposed to biological hazards through:
inhalation
absorption
ingestion
injection.
❖ Engineering and administrative controls are the most common methods used to control
biological hazards. An example of engineering control is a good ventilation system that
