I have a love for reading and enjoy sitting down with a good book in the lazy afternoons or bedtime.
My favourite genre is horror and crime thrillers. I enjoy anything that involves a mystery. My
favourite authors include Stephen King, Michael Robotham and Patricia Cornwell. I especially love
novels which are longer and have more fully developed characters. These types of novels are as
addictive as television series and after finishing the book, you miss the characters as if they have
been friends and family members.........................................................................................................5
Small Things is the one South African novel, I've spent most time with. I have however read Black
Diamond by Jakes Mda. The novel is similar to small things in terms of the setting as it is set in South
Africa. There is also reference to prison in the novel when characters as sent to prison and
constructs a plot of revenge from this setting. The main character experiences conflict and tensions
which leave the reader on the edge of their seats. Just like Small Things, Black Diamond was an
excellent read........................................................................................................................................5
Working through units 4, I was very interested in the explanations surrounding literary devices which
are used to create and develop characters and to describe settings. Before working through this unit,
my understanding of literary devices was limited and I did not know how to apply it to an essay or
questions about a novel. The section gave me the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to apply
knowledge and information about a novel............................................................................................5
I found the novel Small Things very interesting. The novel was a great read and I liked it very much.
The fact that the narrator and main character is never names wad very interesting and captivating. It
added to the mystery surrounding the character and was intriguing. I was disappointed in a way that
his name was never given, but I also like the fact that he still remains a mystery, nameless, but not
small at all. The novel was impactful in a way that it portrayed the experiences of people during
Apartheid and other hardships and struggles in a meaningful and realistic manner.............................5
